Program Overview
Mission Statement
The mission of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Brigham Young University is to develop informed and productive citizens of the family, faith, community, and nation who are prepared to perform effectively in supervised practice and to make meaningful contributions to the dietetics profession.
Program Information
The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) begins with approximately four semesters of pre-professional study, which include University general education requirements and specific Program requirement. Students may then apply for acceptance into the professional sequence, the final two years of study. Professional Sequence coursework includes courses in clinical and community nutrition and foodservice management as well as teaching and research methods in dietetics.
During the student's final semester, application is made for a Dietetic Internship (typically 9-12 months in length; located throughout the US), completion of which is required to qualify for the national examination for registered dietitian status.
Graduation and Program Completion Requirements
Graduates of the Didactic Program in Dietetics are eligible to receive an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) Verification Statement and apply to an accredited Dietetic Internship and/or take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credentialing exam to become a Nutrition and Dietetics, Technician Registered (NDTR). Program completion requirements are:
- Complete all required dietetics major courses and University Core requirements.
- Complete University Baccalaureate Degree Requirements (See http://catalog.byu.edu/policy/graduation for more details).
