The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System is growing rapidly and has openings for two new admin (foodservice) RD positions, two RDs focused in preventative health programs (MOVE! Weight Management/Healthy Teaching Kitchen) and one new diet tech position that would be ideal for either a registered diet tech or for a student with a nutrition and dietetics degree who wasn’t matched to an internship.

The Southern Nevada VA is located in family friendly suburban areas, with access to city amenities and has moderate weather for most of the year.

Job Description:


Under general supervision of the WIC Director, performs professional nutritionist duties involving preparation, implementation, and evaluation of the Women, Infants, and Children program in Weber County.


(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)

Develops, plans, and provides nutrition education. Determines and establishes appropriate nutrition intervention based on client assessment. Initiates tracking and follows high risk clients to monitor health status and refers for treatment if necessary. Assigns and tailors food packages to meet the nutritional needs of the client. Assists the supervisor in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the Nutrition Education plan. Assesses and evaluates clients’ education level, cultural background, values, and beliefs to personalize nutrition counseling in order to better meet their needs. Determines eligibility of Women’s, Infants and Children (WIC) applicants using State WIC policies and procedures. Assesses and assigns nutrition risk factors by using biochemical data, anthropometrical data, medical history, and diet history. Refers clients to other community resources as needed. Promotes breastfeeding among clients to increase breastfeeding rates. Provides breastfeeding support, technical assistance, and education to WIC clients, breastfeeding peer counselors, and staff. Issues electric breast pumps and other breastfeeding aids per state protocol. Evaluates, tracks, and counsels clients regarding the use of the breast pumps and/or breastfeeding aids. Provides timely, accurate, and professional legal documentation using SOAP format per State WIC policies and procedures. Assists in quality assurance activities and self-monitoring tools. Schedules appropriate nutritional education visits to meet the assessed nutritional needs of clients. Educates clients on appropriate use of food instruments and vendor policies.


Education: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Dietetics or Nutrition.

Experience: Completion of a dietetic internship approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of the nutritional needs of women, infants, and children; working knowledge of counseling techniques; working knowledge of techniques of classroom instructions.

Skills: Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred

Abilities: Ability to determine dietary deficiencies in women, infants, and children and suggest proper corrective measures; ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, other employees and the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to teach in front of large groups and one-on-one individually.


Must be a Registered Dietitian.

Must be licensed with the State of Utah (Certified Dietitian (CD).

Optional membership in Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
